Hi all

We're having problems with our Polo.
It's a 1.4 petrol, 2004 reg.

Symptoms:
Engine has cut out on a number of occasions, at least once in a pretty dangerous situation (outside lane of motorway!).
When this happens, the rev counter needle drops to nothing and the oil light flashes.

The car has recently been serviced, and the dealer was asked to look for faults, but said there were none. However I hooked up a vag-com today and got the faults below.

Yesterday I had the throttle body apart to give it a good clean - and initially the car wouldn't start after reassembly. However, after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting, it did start. After a few hiccups all seemed well, until the problem happened again this morning.

I think the misfire faults may be due to the initial startup after the throttle body had been off/cleaned.

Anyway, here are the faults from the engine module:

Also found this in the Cent. Electric module, not sure if it's related:

VAG-COM Version: Release 704.1

Address 09: Cent. Elect.
Control Module Part Number: 6Q1 937 049 D
Component and/or Version: 0000 BN-SG. 1S34
Software Coding: 25774
Work Shop Code: WSC 00788
1 Fault Found:

01054 - Power Supply Relay; Terminal 30 (J317)
28-00 - Short to Plus

I'm assuming the engine speed sensor fault is the main culprit ?
Are these known to fail - and if so, any ideas how much they are to buy & how easy to replace ?

Also anyone know which relay is being referred to, diagram/photo would be nice.

Yes, I would replace the speed sensor first. The dealer obviously didn't do a code read, it makes you wonder if they care.

Update

Got the engine speed sensor from VW. Originally given the wrong part (they gave me the one that reports MPH), even though I told them the fault code. Very disappointed with Smith Knight Fay Bolton:aargh4:. Eventually got the correct part .on Weds 16th April (cost £56.58) and tried to fit it. Failed completely, must be a bit of a wuss, couldn't even find where it was fitted.

Anyway, was told about a place in Little Hulton (Walkden VW Centre). Called in and they fitted the sensor yesterday, 17th. Drove to work today a 60 mile round trip and no problems. It usually cut out at least once on the trip there and back :beerchug:.

So hopefully the problems gone.

Just need to get the Throttle Body re-aligned. A colleague at work has a VAG-COM and will do it on Monday. After that I hope my wife will trust the car again and I can get back to my Audi.

Hi There

How much did it cost you in the end to get right? I am having the identical problem with my Polo. (I appreciate this is a few years ago!!!!)

Tell us a bit more about your car and the problem such as the results of a fault code read report.

Hi Crasher

The Faults Are:
16518 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1, PO134-35-00 No Activity
16706 Engine Speed Sensor (G28) PO322-35-10 No Signal-Intermittant
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylindern Misfire Detected PO300-35-10-Intermittant
16685-Cylinder 1 PO300-35-10-Misfire Detected - Intermittent
16686 Cylinder 2 PO302-35-10 Misfire Detected -Intermittant
16490-Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) PO106-35-10 Implausible Signal-Intermittent
16705-Engine Speed Sensor (G28) PO321-35-10 Implausible Signal Intermittent

My Exhaust is blowing a bit which is why I think the Lambda Sensor is showing a fault.

Thanks!

Certainly those codes are suggesting that replacing the crank speed sensor would be a good starting point.

Hi Andrew

I think the garage charged me about £50 to fit the supplied unit. Obviously there wasn't a guarantee as I supplied the part. However, the upshot was, the fault was fixed and my wife regained her confidence in the Polo and I could have my A4 back.
