Hi i have a black MK4 golf and on the roof the previous owners had roof racks.

Now i have what looks like glue like stuff i think thats what it is anyway. the problem is that its hard and flakey. Does anyone know how i can get this stuff off with out damaging the paint work?

I have tried giving it a wash with hot water but that doesnt seem to work either. So any suggestions would be great thanks!

WD40 might shift it.

Would that damage the paint work in anyway?

Hello there
Have you tried using a hot hairdryer and plastic scraper. Afterwards rub Mer in and polish up. See if this helps

Your glue on the roof may be the remains of the clear vinal sticky patches that are supplied with the roof racks to protect the paint when the racks are fitted. Petrol is good at removing such vinal glue, or as previously suggested use a hair dryer to heat up the glue to make it tacky for 'easy' removal. Polish the area once removed to protect the paint again (Especially if using petrol).

Thanks, i will try the hair dryer first and see how that goes.
