Basic questions on MMI & sat-nav

I've acquired a 2007 A6 Avant with the MMI Basic system and a navigation CD for France, which is where I live, so that's fine. I'd like to get additional map data, e.g. for western Europe, but I know almost nothing about the system and I have a couple of questions. Forgive my ignorance.

(1) In threads on this subject there are references to both CDs and DVDs: are they different systems, or just different sources of data?

(2) I'd like to try to find what I need on e-bay or somewhere similar, because the prices quoted by Audi dealers are out of this world. What information would I need in order to know whether a particular CD (or DVD?) would work with my system?

I have a 2005 A6 with the CD based system and yes it is fundamentally different from the DVD system.

Also, I tried to buy a CD on Ebay and then direct from Tele Atlas who supply the CDs to Audi but neither worked.

Your only alternative I am sorry to say is direct from Audi dealers at Audi prices BUT I am not sure I would recommend even this. I got an updated CD from Audi Customer Services because I complained the data on the CD which came with my car was at least five years out of date in some cases and the "new" CD was hardly any better.

So unless you are having massive problems with your CD version I would suggest you save your money.

I am told the DVD system is a bit more up to date but the DVD will not work in your system.

There are two types of basic,if yours is mono chrome display ignore this explanation but i have posted it anyway to help other mmi users,check your mmi software first.Press and hold setup and return for 10 seconds and then release the buttons,this will take you to the update screen.The first line at the top is the sw version,click on it and you will see your software version ie sw 2020 you need to be running around the 4000 to 5000 for latest software.This can be updated at the dealer cd rom discs.Then buy the 2008 sat nav disc and you will have the latest set upwith full tmc function and 3d mapping.Its the best nav in the business.If your northwest based i can recommend some one to you who has all the discs and specialises in retro fit and software updates as i cant because i work for audi .

Hi a8 tech. I have MMI Basic Plus in my 07 A6. I guess you would describe it as monochrome. Do you know if the latest software along with the latest sat nav disc will provide 3D mapping? Or is this feature simply not possible with MMI Basic Plus?

Hello fat dog,as there isnt any map display on the mmi like mmi high then the answer is no
