Fabia 1.4 8v engine probs

The engine warning light stays on all the time and the power steering light comes on intermittently. When slowing down the engine sometimes cuts out and the tickover is lumpy. Apart from these problems the engine is in good condition ! ( 2001 with 111450 miles )
Any ideas welcome

A fault code read of the engine and power steeering systems.

If the engine runs fine , and the mpg is good, its just telling you that its found a fault and needs to be read, beware if its starts to flash, stop asap and get it towed to a dealer. could be something simple like dirt in the fuel system or lambda sensor, mine was caused by an oil leak, fine now. As for the intermittant Steering symbol, there are two main sysmptoms:

1) Steering still ok but heavy (Hydro assistance ok)
A) Steering angle sensor not sending signal to (electric) power steering pump

2) Steering very heavy, barely able to steer (Hydro/electrics all gone)
A) Power steering pump gone (remember its Hydro/electric

Mine went as (1), but eventually went as (2) on a roundabout (god I was dizzy, six laps to get off, and severe arm ache!!!)

Can anyone of you good people suggest a supplier of a code reader which i would be able to use myself as dealers want silly money to read codes.
