Hi all,

I have recently bought a 2004 A3 2.0TDi.

When I get in the car to go to work in the morning, it seems difficult to engage reverse gear (but only for the first time).

Any ideas why?

this sounds familiar, it happend to me b4 on my Civic Type R. it could be that your Reverse Idler gear is wearing thin (or faulty in your case as the car is only 04). look into the idler gear and see if any more problems like that have popped up in the past. hope this is helpful to you.

Ok, thanks Mojo!

Do you know if it is expensive to get the idler gear replaced?

No problem, not sure of the price but it will involve stripping the gearbox down. shop around with a few places that recondition gearboxes and you should get it for cheap enough - maybe 2-300 euro. :(
