The needle lift sensor is part of the Nr.3 injector.

If it is faulty, the ECU will use a substituted value for that sensors input and as a safety feature not allow the engine to produce full power.

The car is having problems regulating the 'start of injection'.

This is possibly due to a defective needle lift sensor (G80 / injector 3), but first make sure your static injection timing is within range, and that there is no air in the fuel lines.

The injection pump timing needs garage/dealer diagnostic equipment or vagcom connected to the car to check.

Depending on your model, there may be a transparent bit of tube in the fuel system that allows you to check for air bubbles.
