I have an 03 GT Tdi 5 door 130 which I am generally very happy with although its done about 85k with a full history. I have been driving it for a couple of weeks now and can't ignore a couple of noises.

Noise 1: I get a slight knocking/clunking at speeds under 30mph in town when driving over bumps etc. Sounds like it comes from the front wheels although it doesn't seem to come from either side in particular.

Noise 2: I also notice a slight noise when parking, is the PAS noisy generally?

Any advice greatly appreciated...

Noise 1 , almost certainly the front anti-roll bar bushes worn, dealer replaced them for about £100
Noise 2 , could be PAS fluid low, drive belt not tensioned correctly?

Thanks for your post Ashfield, I suspected the Anti Roll Bushings as seems to be a problem on this car. :( It's under a warranty still so fingers crossed they cover it, will let you know, as for the other noise it only does it at parking speeds on full lock to the left? :1zhelp:

the anti roll bar bushes will probably not be covered under the warranty as they are classed as a wear and tear item, i've had a trading standards dispute opened over this as i had a disagreement with the supplying dealer over several faults the car 'developed'. the bushes are the one fault i couldnt get done at the dealer/warranty's expense! they're not dear to buy i've been told? about £20 for the parts and replacment isn't that difficult if you have someone handy with a spanner! could be wrong with the price?

Cheers eshrules

I was concerned that might be the case, German Swedish and French car parts list a pair of bushings at about 15 with VAT on them so your right about the not dear bit but as for fitting them myself I'm not so sure, had a bit of a look this morning and have yet to locate the roll bar?? :Blush2: Might get a Haynes manual.

I had the same (rattle over bumps) problem with my 2000 golf GT TDI plus an additional rattle over bumps at the rear. I changed the anti-roll bar bushes, to my horror it didn't change a thing. I found the problem at the front was down to the wishbone bushes. At the rear it was the rear axle bushes. I had 'PowerFlex' bushes fitted front and rear, by an independant VW/Audi specialist. My local dealer wanted £563 to do the job. Cost me £311 and what a fabulous ride now. No rattles at all.

hi, just an update on my situation. had the front anti roll bar bushes done, has now been noted that the wishbone bushes need doing, from what i have been told,is easier and quicker to replace the wishbone for what it is worth.... i too had the rattle on the back going over humps, had the rear bushes done too. £300 and odd pound does sound a little high though, i reckon ill have spent £100 in total on the parts, they really aren't that hard to DIY
