View Full Version : GTI noisy tappets

I own a GTI 8v 1.8 from 1990. A few years ago, on start-up, the tappets start to make a noise. After it warmed-up, the noise went. Now, the noise is constant. The car has done about ~140,000 miles. Anything I can do or do the tappets have to replaced?

Change the tappets for Febi INA parts but a new oil pump may also be a good idea.

If not, be very careful, Febi have an extremely good name and it is not uncommon for their packaging to be forged and filled with inferior parts. I buy direct from Febi UK so I know what I am buying. Once I had to do the head gasket on the wife’s Golf 2 GTI and I had run out of stock so I ordered some in from another company which came in a Febi box. They rattled so badly that I pulled them out two days later when my stock came in and they have been quiet for the last five years even with a Kent GS2H cam. I don’t know the price off the top of my head though; you would need to call for a price.

Thanks for the info.

I've not replaced tappets before so it's new territory. I've read some stuff on other posts but I'm not sure what's involved. I've taken the rocker cover off before to change the gasket and there's a fair bit to remove before you get there. That's not a problem.

I know others have suggested cleaning out the engine and replacing the oil a few times which I haven't really tried either.

You have to remove the cam so new belt and tensioner when it goes back together. If it is burning oil, this would be a good time to replace the valve oil seals but to do this without removing the head means specialised equipment and an air compressor, compressed air is used to keep the valves closed.
