:1zhelp:I have just completed a replacement of 4 cams lots of other parts had the injectors serviced, on an 156,000mile AKE 2.5 v6 TDI . I never saw the car running befoer I bought it so it may of smoked very bad then. I will ask the firm that I bought it from, if it was smoking/useing oiler before it was taken of the road to get the cams sorted out.

Fired it up today and it smokes very bad when revved and appears not to have much power. It is also appears idling just a little too fast.

Its not quite as bad as when the seals when on my G40 supercahrger, but it is pretty blue.

I have looked at the following.

There appears to be no oil in the pipes arfter the intercooler.

I removed the output from the turbo and glanced in and there appeared to be no excess oil, but I can't 100% rule out the turbo. If I pull it off does anyone have any pictures of the likely suspect seal and are these available for diy service?

There is maybe 1-1.5litres to much oil in the engine that may be being drawn up and burnt.

However I suspect either valve stem seals have worn due to the metal debris from the damaged cams.

Anyone got any idears on this?

I spoke to a local Diesel specialist and he suggested I may need to just go a really cook the engine has the smoke coudl be from all the incorrectly fuel carbon deposit in the exhaust and manifolds so will need a lot of heat to reduce this. I not used any noticeable oil during my tests so far.

The EGR channel in teh inlet manifold was heavily carbed up from where the exhaust gas cools down, maybe the turbo is like this?

I have run the car for upto 10-15min at a time maybe a little longer idling, and drive a very short distance no possibility of boosting it. It is current without mot so I don't want to take it for a longer spin on the road. At the moment it will not pass an emissions test as the tester will be gassed before he fits the probe!

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I would rather not have to take the heads of but its looking that way. Does anyone know of any head refurbishers who have done the v6 tdi heads before and done a good? I will need the valves/guids checking and new valve stem seals I think.

I not sure whether to have the whole engine out for a full rebuild. I have fitted a new oil pump

And to top[ it off when adjusting the timing on the diesel pupm I dropped my allen key into the belts so I will have to strip that off before I can do anything with it:zx11:

What's the engine number?
There is a PCV filter in the valley of the V below the metal injector pipe array which blocks up to a certain engine number when the design was changed. Take the oil cap off and make sure there is no excessive gas coming out. Try running with the cap off or loose.

AKE025336 is my engine code, I have not really seen any oil in the intercooler, what are the symptons if the pcv is blocked. Woudl the pump timing out smoke, would that be blue/white I not been able to get any black smoke out when adjustign the pump.

While idling the car today it stalled and went ekk!

2 valves hit piston! smahsed vavlves/head piston.

I noticed also that one of the other pistons has been running with something in it, as there was a lump hitting the head on top of the piston so no wonder it was running rough.

Not sure what caused the valves to hit I was not able to check the vcam timing arfter failure as I coudl not turn the bottom end to get it to tdc.

When I removed the timing pulley it was fully locked on so I don't think it shifted.

I wondering if a valve stuck open, or the hydraulic lifter stuck, I had pattern lifteres that seamed very stiff when compared to the vag ones ( I had to buy 2 guinine ones)

Now working out my options,

:(

I think you had an oil pressure problem, the reason for the cam failure and probably turbo failure. It looks like the best course of action will be to fit a new exchange engine but from Audi that is hugely expensive as it comes as a bottom end plus two heads and a tag of £6K.

I fitted a brand new oil pump, I personally suspect the pattern hydraulic lifters as they were very stiff, I will do some more dignostics on it.

There was oil going into the turbo by the looks of things from the crankcase breather, there was also signs of previous foreign body damage in the piston heads.

snapdragon, what is the engine number after which the PCV system was improved on the AKE engine ? Thanks

Not sure, but after a lengthy search, I can't see the problem being reported on cars later that 2001, I don't think the AKE came in until 2003 and looks pretty much like an AKN with an additional miniature catalytic convertor right after the turbocharger. Confused :zx11:

Mines an AKE in an Allroad, it has the little cat arfter the turbo.

Still not got the other head off but something odd happened causing the valve breakage on mine.

The PCV is there an improved part or is it they just sludge up?

I will be taking the engine out for a full overhaul check now. Was meant to be ready by June but the rate I am going it will never be finished:aargh4:

I think the smoke I had was un burnt fuel, as I have noticed there was a foreign body in the first piston on the bank with the broken valve embedded in the piston which was hitting the head. The ECU trying to stop the car from vibrating badly just up the fueling to try to stabilise things and hence my 1000rpm idle speed, it did idle slow at first then it change how it sounded and was at 1000rpm. And this made it run really bad. I bought the car with inlet manifold removed, I bunged teh holes as soon as I got the car but now I wish I took the heads off!

As far as I know the design of the breather never changed. The repair kit is 046 198 475 B £16.54 and the breather/filter unit is the same number from 98 to 2008.

That's a useful part number crasher, cheers.
Snap, my late 2001 quattro has the AKE mill...
