Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can help me with what I hope is quite a simple and in-expensive problem ?

Have noticed that water is getting into my MK4 Golf on the passenger side about two inches from the lower rear corner of the door causing water to collect under the passenger seat. Have been out with the hose and flashlamp and noticed that water is collecting in the door-sill then flowing over the plastic seal into the car.

I am thinking that i need a new rubber seal that is connected only to the underneath of the door (no idea what they are called??).

Can any one help with a suggestion?

I have exactly the same issue only it's with the drivers side, and it only tends to happen if the car is not parked on the flat. The problem is that while I have some control over what part of the drive I park on when I'm home, if I have to park in town and it's raining I can't always be so fussy.

If I park the car facing uphill water fills a void between the underneath of the the drivers door and the car body. There is a rubber fitting underneath the door here:

that then allows water to run up and over the door seal here:

which you can clearly see here:

instead of running off outside the car.

I'm wondering if it's the door seals that need replacing, or the rubber bit under the door. I can ask VW, but at £60 an hour for them to look at it I'd rather just ask them to replace the right bit first time.

Any suggestions.

Thanks.

You have exactly the same problem as me it seems.

I removed the door panel over the weekend and have noticed that from what I can see the source of the water is that the seals around the metal panel which is bolted on the door have rotten away and are compleatly soaked.

I guess it would have been possible to re-seal this with some silicone but I did not want to just force the water to seep from another point if this was not the real route of the problem.

I have the car booked into the local garage to get it sorted now once and for all i hope!!

Might be worth you taking the door panel of yours to see if your seal is also worn?

Can I ask what year and model you have, I saw another post on here that said the MK IV didn't have the same door construction as the MK II and III and from what I can see the water is simply going under the door, not thru it...

What panel did you remove, and how easy was it. I'm handy enough, used to maintain my previous Mondeo, but this is a new to us VW and it has a full VW Service History, so I'm reluctant to start messing with it myself...

We're due a service in 1000 miles, let me know what parts you had replaced and I'll have them done while it's in.

Mines a 2002 golf Gttdi.

The door panel was simple enough to remove just make sure that you loosen all the screwes before applying any force to remove the door (especially those hidden in the door handle).

Here are some links which I found helpfull:

The second link shows the panel which I belive to be the source of the problem :-

Have a look at

http://www.agthompsonfamily.com/vw/FrontDoor12.jpg

The rubber part just beside the left most arrow is that part I suspect is worn.

I didn't think water was passing thru the door, simply around and under it.

Unless your talking about

http://www.agthompsonfamily.com/vw/WindowRegulator60.jpg

where you have water creeping into and thru the door.

I'll have another good look tomorrow, but with the door closed it's obviously pretty hard to see exactly whats going on...

From what I can see the water on mine is comming from the door itself as per the lower of the 2 photos included in our post.
