Hi guys,

looking at one of these around 55-56 plate, not sure which one to go for, is the 170 one just had a remap from factory? because if i do, go for a 140 i could always get it remapped at a later stage....
what is the mpg difference in both engines?

also is it best to buy one now or wait a few months as the new one is out now, which should mean depreciation for the old one, what do u reckon??

cheers

I just bought A4 B7 2.0 TDI 140.

The engine is very responsive already why upgrade to 170 ??.

With the new models out now,ok they have common rail, but I got a great deal, audi approved. you will get yourself a bargain if you get one now.;)

what kinda miles do you get off a full tank mainly mway driving? as my mate has the B4 1.9 tdi 130 and he gets around 650 miles doing 80mph which is excellent.

i know about the B6 1.9tdi's, which are capable of 650 miles out of a tank, but what about the B7 - 2.0 tdi 140/170 models, what's the max they get???

On my first full tank of juice, 2.0 TDI 140 , looks like I will get around 500 to the tank, that is city driving , driving on motorways I would expect at least 600 to tank. early days tho.

The 140 will go to about 190hp and the 170 will go to about 210.

Thanks, Mark

and what torque figures would both engines increase by? i thought the 170bhp was the same engine with 140 but already remapped from factory??

They'll both gain up to 70 lb/ft on stock. There are a few dirffernces with the 170.

Taken from a report on the Net.

"This engine also features Piezo injectors that precisely meter fuel delivery to provide more power and even stronger performance. Featuring a high-pressure pump and rail for the four cylinder engine, the Piezo system permits up to five separate amounts of fuel to be injected on each working stroke at an injection pressure of 1,600 bar - 250 bar more than with previous common rail systems. This helps to achieve the best possible fuel/air mixture and an even more efficient combustion process. Environmental impact is also minimised by a diesel particulate filter, which is fitted as standard and works in conjunction with the twin catalytic converters to maximise exhaust gas cleansing."

I have a 170BHP S-Line Special edition. I have had a few scraps with other VW TDI's and I have to say that there is little difference in performance (which is dissapointing for me!!).
I tend not to hang about on the roads, mainly A & B roads, and I get about 550miles out of a tank, I would expect his to improve significantly if I did more motorway driving.

I have a 2.0 TDI 170 Quattro Avant and am lucky to get 450 - 500 miles out of a tank! However i think the quattro has a smaller tank to allow room for the rear transmission.

If you look at a 140 or 170 car the 170 has 2 air ducts to feed the 2 intercoolers compared to the 140's 1 duct. I'm no mechanic but thats what i was told. I would ALWAYS go for the 170 if you can afford it. Its like Quattro or bose if you dont get it you will always wish you had?? many things like sat nave and all the other crap can be retrofitted so i really stretched myself to get the 170 quattro hoping to add sat nav, etc later.

good luck I LOVE my audi! had it 18 months now and still love every mile! :biglaugh:

I recently bought a 140 tdi sline auto with sat nav, GSM phone, CD as well a and quite a few other toys, the car performs very well, the auto is smooth and porwerful as well as incredibly economical - iget 50 - 54 mpg on motorway runs. Before I bought my car I trawled the Audi used car locator and did a lot of reseraching into the best deals. Right now there's a batch of 07 140 tdi multis with sat nav at up to £10 less than what they would have cost new 12 months ago. So go for it

I have a 55 Plate 2.0 TDi 140 Saloon and on motorways can get 700+ out of a tank. True I don't have a lead right foot but 6th gear at 75 is bearly 2000 rpm. It's mostly down to how you drive/anticipate whats going on ahead. The 170 is supposedly a little heavier on fuel but the real killer is that it is 3 insurance groups higher and as of next year will be 2-3 car tax bands higher (emissions).
Others have said that the performance difference is minimal - to make an informed choice test drive both, but your wallet (as well as your head/heart) should have a say in what you buy!

I have just this week bought 2008, 57 plate 2.0TDi S Line 140 manual, with Sat Nav fitted, from an Audi dealership for £18.5k.

When I first starting browsing for a new car 2 months ago, this age / spec was 21 - 22k, so they have definitely dropped in price over the last few weeks, since the new shape started hitting the streets.
