You haven't mentioned what car you have which has this problem, I had a mk1 golf a few years back which was part of a recall as oil was being drawn up into the air header box where it caused the diesel engine to run off the rev clock, there were a few people who actually crashed their cars as a result.
The fix is a non return valve in the breather hose which minimised the problem, if you have a mk1 golf you might want to have a look in your air header box to see how much oil is in there if any.

My throttle intermittently revs itself up in my Audi 80 TDI. Which engine have you got in the A3, is it an early one (non PD, 1z engine?)
Sounds like and interesting fix on the Golf but that wouldn't have been a TDI, would that work on the 80?

I have taken the liberty of having an independant inspection carried out by the RAC so that i can compare Direct line's report with RAC's one. The RAC recon the damage could have been caused by hydrolic failier of the oil pump or the fuel pump so i will have to wait and see what happens after they have pondered over the report from the RAC.

The car is an Audi A3 2001 model Engine no ASV215359 of which i have had an independant inspection carried out by the RAC and they have said it could be related to the oil pump failing or fuel pump failure as the pistons and all of the internal parts of the engine were damaged.

This can happen when the turbo oil seals fail, on the compressor side, and the engine starts burning it's lubrication oil.
The only way to stop it, is to stop the car, put it in high gear and lift the clutch.
Removing the ignition key will not stop it.
It is a fairly rare occurance but not unheard of.
Check the intercooler for oil, there should be no oil in it. If there is oil in it then the seals in the turbo have gone and allowed oil into the engine in an uncontrolled manner.

Good Luck with it.

When you put into neutral and switched it off, did it over-run? (not stop running)

No the engine revs fell as soon as i switched off the engine.
