Hi,

I just bought a 98 passat tdi 110 on Saturday and 20 mins after I bought it the cam blet went on the way home - doh! It was well overdue a change and the dealer I bought it off was going to get his friend to do it. The car has 144k on it and the belt was last done at 60k in 2001. I agreed a lower price and took the car off him then as I wanted to get it done at a vw specialist to be sure it was done properly.

I was doing 70mph when it went and initially I thought I had a flat tyre because of the sound / vibration. I pulled over straight away and looked under the bonnet to see all the belts hanging off. The AA bloke reckoned that the fan belt went and then took out the cam belt.

Needless to say I'm gutted. I was wondering if anyone else had had one go on one of these engines? I've had it taken www.autobarn.org.uk (http://www.autobarn.org.uk/) a specialist in Basingstoke (where I live) on the recommendation of a friend. He's going to pull the head off and assess the damage.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience so I can brace myself for the cost!

Thanks

Dom

Thats really bad luck, I can imagine how you must feel. In regards to fan belts, does anyone know how often should these be changed on the passat? I take it, it won't be a simple job. I haven't touched my fan belt yet, I've done the servicing myself, done around 25k this year, i have a 97 tdi 110. Its worrying that a fanbelt could do that, although as it was overdue a cambelt service, I expect it didn't take much to wipe it out. Best of luck with autobarn.

As far as I'm aware off, you change the fan belt at the same time as the cambelt, but I could e wrong.

As for your predicament fatcatpassat, I had a similar experience with a Vectra a few months ago. Cambelt blew and took all the valves with it. The initial check revealed that all the valves had been taken out by that and it would have cost me at least £800 to get it fixed. That is not to mention the other stuff they would find once they started the job.

Sorry for beaing the bearer of (potentially) bad news.

Cheers:
Chris

My engine model is AFN - 110 bhp. Does anyone know if an AFU 90 bhp cylinder head would fit my engine ok? Or any other VAG 1.9 TDI model cylinder heads? I'm struggling to find a second hand AFU one.

Going to stick it out and get it fixed, so not interested in selling it.

Thanks
