My problem is No spark at number 2 plug. A handheld reader shows no codes and the engine check light is not on.
I have purchased a serial cable to run the VAG-COM but can't get that working yet (Interface not present)
Ihave replaced the plugs and fitted a new coil on cylinder number 2 but still no spark.
Any suggestions as to where to move now?
Does this car have an ignition amplifier anywhere?
Is it likely to be a the problem.

Yes it has an amp, on the bulkhead and they do cause trouble. It changed part number in 97 as the early unit was very troublesome. The early part number is 4D0 905 351 and was used up until chassis number wauzzz8DzV(N or A)244483. Either version costs £136.94 inc. VAT from Audi.

My ignition amplifier failed on my 1.8T 1996 a couple of years ago, also no spark on no2 cylinder. As you look into the engine bay, its under the plastic cover on the left by the air cleaner housing, black plastic piece with a plug connector both sides. 99.0 percent sure this is your problem, regards.

Thank you for all the replies. I have confirmed the unit is faulty 4D0 905 351. the diagrams got me thinking and also having read on another forum about a method of testing this out of circuit. I came up with a correct method of verifying this as faulty.
the methods i read before and tried didn't work and in fact seemed to be incorrect. I took pictures and am writing a tutorial that I can verify as working and correct (previous ones seemed to have the relation between the input and output pins wrong). If of any interest I will make a post containing this tutorial.
very easy to follow.
Thank you once again

Just to confirm. I fitted the new ICM today and it has completely cured the car.
Thank you all for your help with this.
