New to the game and looking for advise

I've an A4 1999 1.6l with high miles, (145000)
I bought the car just under a year ago and do alot of miles
The car has a full service history and used to run like a dream.

One day coming home from work the engine started to lose power.
At first t I thought it was a spark plug had gone south.
Brought the car to the doctor and was told that there was no compression in the second cyclinder.

The Mechanic said that the only solution was a new or replacement engine at a cost of 2000 euro approx!!!

What i want to know is if there is anything else that can be done instead of forking out alot of cash on a replacement engine this close to Xmass.

Are there any other tests that I should carry out or look for done by a mechanic, is it the end of the engine or is there any hope

Is it time to send the car to the big carpark in the sky??

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome

A new engine sounds a bit drasitc! I would get a second opinion from somebody who doesn't need Christmas money. Usually a loss of compression that would require an engine change would mean you either have a hole in a piston or the rings have snapped! Either way, it would make the car undriveable with all the bits off metal floating about in your sump and block.
If it really is a complete loss of compression, maybe your mechanic is right but a partion loss, i.e. down to 50% (or so) of the others, then maybe you should look at the cylinder head.
Either way, the head has to come off so you may as well start there.
If you do decide to send a '99 A4 to the 'big carpark in the sky', gimme a shout, I'll gladly remove it so you don't have to look at it anymore lol.
