Audi A4 smell of coolant in car

My 1998 A4 1.9TDI avant has a slight smell of coolant when the heater is switched on (but not when temperature setiing is at Lo. It takes a little top-up water from time to time but there is no steaming up of windows. I suspect a matrix leak, any suggestions?

If you're not getting any vapour on the screen, Fidd, then it isn't the matrix.
Sounds more like the cabin thermostat to me; have a look at the handbook by all means, but I beleive it's mounted on the nearside upper sideplate of the heater distribution casing.
One means of localising the problem is to use a piece of clean white kitchen roll pressed into the carpet at various points round the heater unit - antifreeze will give you a staining effect on the tissue where it's present.
