View Full Version : WindScreen Wiper Problem

I have a 1998 Golf Cabriolet,, this morning the windscreen wipers were iced (I didn't realise) and I switched on the wipers and nothing happened. Now they don't work at all but all other electrics seem to work.

I am virtually a mechanical moron and after being stung by Audi main dealer for labour charges on my wife's A4 I don't want to get ripped off again. Anyone any idea what the problem might be abd how to resolve it myself?

Please don't flame me too much :rocketwho I can just about locate the spare wheel and that's as far as it goes (although I'm hoping to improve that).

Thanks, mark.

Hi Check fuse 5 (15amp)

Where would I find then Kenney & how would I check the ones for the wipers?

Regards, mark.

The fuses are above your right lower leg under the dash board, you have to remove the small panel to access the fuses. Fuse 5 (the fifth from the left in a row of 22) is the wiper motor feed fuse which you may have blown due to overloading the motor. Can you hear the motor running?

Thanks a lot Crasher, that is excellent.

No the wiper motor doesn't make a noise (neither does the washer motor if I try that)

Many thanks, Mark.

The washer pump is on the same fuse.

No, that is Lupo. He is a normal British short hair although he does have delusions of grandeur. He knows that the ancient Egyptians worshiped cats as God's and thinks the tradition should be continued.

Hi i've just had my MOT wiper's worked fine, on the way home started to rain went to put my wipers on and nothing. front wipers don't work, rear wipers don't work and water jets don't work. Any suggestions, i've tried and tested the fuse.

Hi If you are sure everything else works, heater blower, lights etc, then the rear and front wiper have one thing common and that is the wiper switch

hi, right i've tested the lights and blower, all lights work but not the blower or wipers (still). so could it be the relay?

You then need to check X-contact relief relay this is in position 4 on the fuse carrier, or the ignition switch. If you look behind the ignition switch you will see a red wire and a yellow on black wire if you bridge thes two wires and your wipers work then it is your ignition switch which is faulty,if they dont work then you need to replace the relay pos 4

If the heater blower/headlights/heated rear window have also stopped working, suspect the X relay and the ignition switch. What is the car?

Sorry for repeating you there Kenney, I wrote that and then posted it later.

Kenney / Crasher, I replaced the 5th fuse from the left and that solved my problem.

Thanks for the great advice, I will make a donation to this site on your behalves.

Does everything else work? Screen washers, heater blower, headlights?

wipers front/back, water jets and heater blower are all not working.

And the headlights and heated rear window will not be working either. That is usually the ignition switch at fault. Get a new, genuine VW, switch and remove the lower steering column trim. Disconnect the plug from the switch and plug it into the new switch. Start the car using a screwdriver in the new switch (DO NOT DRIVE IT LIKE THIS) and see if everything works. If it does, install the switch-which is fun!

is the ignition switch what you put your key in or is it the 'multi-function switch wiring connectors' as it says in the haynes manual? Also my headlights work fine but not sure on the heated rear window as the light on that switch hasn't worked for ages. I'm thinking that my headlights might still be working as a previous owner had an alarm linked to them. i thought that might have something to do with them still working.

The system that appears to have failed is the X line controlled by the X relay and the ignition switch. If the X line stops, so should your headlights. The wiring alterations may have something to do with the problem. As it is obviously not standard, this makes it very difficult for me to help you.

Depending on which type of electronics box,it is one of 2 fuses, fuse 19 or fuse 31 in the electronics box in the engine bay.The wiper will not work with the bonnet open.

I have seen quite a few 8P model A3’s with blown central electrics units (also called the Onboard Power Supply) due to back feed from HID kits.

K33TLR
20-07-2009, 08:07 PM
so is this going to be a constant problem with the HID kit fitted?

Crasher
20-07-2009, 08:09 PM
If it is a back feed issue, you have to isolate the power supply directly to the battery and fit a diode on each command line to prevent back feed. I refuse to fit HID kits.

i wasnt expecting this from getting HID kit fitted. tried various bulbs to improve vision at night due to deer and wildlife in the part of scotland i live in bt HID kit was a gd buy bt now there could be problems because of it then HID kit now not sounding such a gd option. do you think aberdeen audi will fit diodes to prevent feedback form HID kit if this is the problem or should i get HID kit removed to prevent any other problems?

Crasher

I would fall over in shock if an Audi main dealer offered or even agreed to do that. If it is the HID kit that has caused the problem, you need to talk to the kit supplier about it.
