Hi all

I've got a a4 turbo P reg 77,000 miles A1 condition (I thought), recently bought 6 months ago.
Anyway cut a long story short I noticed after a while the lack of power I was getting as I got thrashed off the lights by white van men. my catalytic convertor went pete tong when I went to bournemouth (300 miles) got a new 1 fitted still no difference.
I took it to a turbo specialist and he told me that the cat had broken up and a piece had got into the turbo which knackered it so I got that fixed (£825:00):aargh4: . now it starts to jolt mainly and is still lacking in power, what is going on? It is due a service, IN2 flashing at the minute, do you think a service would fix this problem or could it be worse.

Probably the same old thing, MAF sensor.
Considering the amount of work you have had done to the car to try and rectify the fault, I can't imagine that it would be down to a leaky boost hose or something similar.
Put the car on a diagnostic engine tuner and check the emissions, if its high, maybe lambda sensor, also try unplugging the MAF sensor (not MAP sensor) to see if it make any difference to the engine.
Could you be more specific. Is the car boosting? Do you have a surge in power which rapidly dissapears, is this the 'jolt' you mean?
This could be down do a faulty wastegate, allowing the engine to overboost which then makes the overboost protection valve kick in, usually, its a fuel shut off which momentarily stops the engine (although I don't have any experience with Audi, just SAAB, Subaru, Ford, Mitsubushi).

You found your problem then (or at least part of it!)
If disconnecting the Air Flow Meter makes no difference at all then you maybe need to start there.

Marc97, when driving along the car jolts, mainly in third gear but also in others, it only happens when I am about to change gear. It is as if I release my foot of the accelerator and then put it back on again. just like a new driver when they Kangaroo it.:1zhelp: please.

I had the air flow meter changed but the mechanic changed it back because it made no difference.

Sounds like an overboost device kicking in, does it happen on light throttle at all, i.e. when the turbo isn't really boosting?

It does it when I take my foot off the accelerator but not when my foot is down under normal driving conditions. It doesnt matter if the car is hot or cold/wet or dry. I also dont think the turbo is kicking in at all?

Need much more info really, I've got a mate with a Passat 1.8T and he's had no end of problems with coil packs and temp sensors (not senders!).
Also, if a fault has been logged on the ECU, you might be better getting it cleared.
I assume the car has been on a diagnostic machine?

Hi Shagster,

I have a VW Turbo diesel SPort, and had the same problem.

I found a brilliant place that specialises only in Turbo and Injection problems, Wilkinsons in Stockport - 01614764645 - they sorted my car - £35 for a diagnostic, and then they suggest the solution. My diesel was having exactly the same trouble you seem to be having, a job doing 60mph up a hill, overtaken by LORRIES even in the slow lane! It needed a new Air Mass Unit fitting (at least that was what was on the bill - £128 all-in - including the diagnostic - don't even know what one of them is!) and it is now totally sorted. I had the start of the problem - not pulling properly - when it was serviced by VW on a full service - and they said nothing.

Hope this helps, but you seem to have looked into the above. Hope you get it sorted.

Regards

Mikwag

Hello Mikwag
thanks for the suggestion of changing the air flow mass meter.
as you may of read that I had changed it for a couple of days but could'nt tell any difference, but that was before I had changed the cat and the turbo.
I'm willing to spend £130 to see if this solves the problem if it dont I think I'll give the car to a box of swan vesta's to play with. lol.
cheers mate:o .

Hi Shagster,

I suggest the £35 diagnostic test, especially if you can get to Wilkinsons in Stockport.
Gotta be worth a £35 diagnostic after all you have done! :bigok:

Best of luck with it.
