Following the recent demise of my dual mass flywheel see this thread:

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=3110&highlight=sick

I'm going to attempt to recoup some of my now estimated £1100 repair bill from VW.
The car is 3 years 8 months old and obviously outside of its 3 year industry standard warranty. It has been serviced regularly upto 95K with authorised VW dealers and the last two with VW specialist independents. Current mileage is 120K.
Agreed its not an inconsiderable amount of mileage, but by some inter-galactic standards you sometimes read about, not that much.
I spoke briefly with the dealer about the subject today, but don't hold out much hope of help from that area. >:( There was a lot of sharp intakes of breath, and shaking of heads going on. But undeterred, nothing ventured nothing gained ;)
The car has been following the longlife servicing regime, but the info on what that covers is a little sketchy ???
Whilst I accept the expense of replacing the clutch friction plate under normal wear & tear, I am increasingly becoming frustrated as to the prospect of shelling out for a component, which in my opinion should last the life of the engine.
So if anyone has any experience of getting VW to accept responsibility for failure of out of warranty components, I'd be glad for your input.
As a side, on a similar note just to prove miracles do happen. I once owned a Ducati 748 on which the engine lunched itself due to the failure of a timing belt tensioner failing. This was 2 months out of warranty at the time, but eventually after a long wait, Ducati footed the bill for the £5000 repair :D
Thanks

as a company they legally have no responsibility as you say it is out of warranty, that said if you can prove the service that it has recieved then who knows, as you potentially have this bill to pay, the only thing it will cost you is your time.
keep us posted as to how you get on.

Wasn't there a recall for the dual mass flywheels once?

VW and Audi TDi'sConcern:The dual-mass flywheel is breaking-up and causing fires. VW Audi group are well aware, and have recalled some models, but not all that seem to be affected.

I found this info on http://www.hannaford-forensic.com/recalls.htm
although I cannot guarantee how genuine it is (but yours didn't set on fire as much as you might wish it had lol). Make a phone call and see what they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone,

Following a link to www.honestjohn.co.uk (http://www.honestjohn.co.uk) has highlighted that VW have indeed contributed to the repair costs of various faults on cars up to 5 years old. :biggthump

I will contact them direct if I cannot get any joy from my dealer :argue:

I'm collecting my car on Monday, so wish me luck.

LChris,
I have had lots of problems when I first bought my wife a VW Golf TDi 1.9, one of the rear suspension bushes split and required replacement, I was informed however that the bush is 'not replaceable' and that a new rear axle subframe at £700 was required. Someone in Germany has the bushes and presses them into the subframes but they are not available for you and me to replace.
Add to that a replaced cam belt at £300 that had only just been changed prior to my purchase of the car but not marked in the service schedule and completely knackered pads and discs which had just passed a 60000 mile dealer 'service' with no comments noted. I wrote to VW who quickly told me no consideration would be made as did the dealer.
However, I persevered and after much moaning and groaning especially from the dealer VW paid £450 towards the £950 bill so my advice to you hang in there and persevere!
