Have a look at the link for the how-to guide to changing it. It should be changed at minimum every 4 years / 40,000 miles however I always do mine every 2 years.

You should change the fuel filter at least every 2 years or 20,000 mls its suppose to be 40,000 mls but to keep your fuel system and all the diesel injectors spraying the correct pattern change it every 2 years. When I change my fuel filter I remove the 2 pipe with the clips on them and then unclip the horse shoe clip and remove the large plastic connector with the 2 other pipes joined together at the base of this connector you will find to o-rings which are different colours change these o-rings to. Inside the new filter box you will find these o-rings. CHANGE THESE O-RINGS OK!!! next thing to do is slacken off the big phillips screw and pull old filter from its housing. Easy as that. Once you've refitted all the pipes and clips just start engine it may cut out for first couple of times but once its running just let it idle and all the air will be disspersed from the fuel system. When I change my fuel filter I always put a diesel fuel conditioner in the filter first. I use the Forte Diesel Conditioner. Youget this from your local Halfords or Auto shop. It costs about £10 for a bottle, but it does your fuel system a world of good. Hope this helps you mate. Thought I'd change my fuel filter, but the Haynes manual says that changing the fuel filter is only necessary if you use diesel with high sulphur content, which is not available in the UK. That put me off the idea, until now... Seems like people really recommend it.

A fuel filter doesn't cost a lot, £8 I think. You might be able to get away with draining it?
I had a problem with my car not starting very well, and it turned out to be the fuel filter full of water (!). A new filter cured it. So it's worth doing!

For the sake of £8, why not. I think on a VW service, they just drain it, butafter so many years who knows what state the element is in?
Do it!
