Just for info.
Last week I lost, with little warning, 1st/2nd & 5th/Rev. Only 3rd/4th gear could be had & both of these were very stiff. On deep investigation found the vertical shaft of the mechainism in the top of the 'box was siezed vertically but still free to rotate. Cause (apart from 215,000 miles !) was linear bearing at top of shaft was wrecked as was the protecting seal. Seal costs £9, bearing £6. However the shaft, which is damaged slightly, is no longer available seperatly. VW want £140 for the complete assembly !
To access the shaft assy. involves stripping out coolant header tank, battery tray, gearbox mounting etc etc. Basically a lot of work. I suggest if anyone has a box out they renew the seal as a matter of course !
