I have a MK2 Golf 1.6 auto on a pierburg carb. Sometimes the car stalls as though not getting enough fuel, new fuel pump, full clean out and filter in line, I was convinced for some time that the issue was fuel starvation but now I'm not so sure. It was spluttering over the weekend, so to prevent it stalling, I put it in to neutral and the revs came up straight away, no misfire, coughing or hesitation, I put it back in to drive and went to pull away and it coughed and spluttered and didnt want to pull away, put it back in neutral and all the revs came back. I cannot see a breather coming from the autobox so am a bit stumped as to why this should happen. Any ideas at all?

Hi
Had similar problem on mine so invested in a webber carb conversion but found the fault in the process of swapping the carb over. Connected to the inlet manifold is a brake vacuum hose and this was found to have a small split that was drawing air with the engine under load. The best way to diagnose this is to spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb and manifold with the engine running any changes in the engine revs would indicate a leak.

Carb Cleaner?! :1zhelp:Keep that stuff well away from the ignition, it burns a treat! WD40 will do the same job but is much less flammable. Note the use of LESS, I have once removed some of my facial hair with the fireball from a mist of WD40 and a shorted ignition lead. Fortunately it's only the mist that burns.
If carb cleaner, EVERYTHING will be cremated!
Can I watch?:p

Also the big rubber sandwich gasket beneath the carb breaks down and leaks air. (I might be talking out of my hat, as I can't remember if the 1.6's use these, £14? GSF) Good Luck.
