Interior lights / switches ? ? ?

Friend has just bought an 03 Octavia tdi estate. It runs well but the interior/courtesy light switch is knackered, have got a replacement unit coming so it should sort that, but the interior/courtesy lights in the boot on both sides wont come on either, are the two problems connected and by changing the switch will the boot lights then work.

P.S i have checked bulbs and replaced them - still nothing
