1993 Seat Ibiza 1.8 16 valve speedo/gearbox problem

As the title say i have an ibiza 1.8 16 valve with a problematic speedo. it just won't work any ideas? I've changed the bit that connects to the gearbox but it keeps eating the nylon bit. Sometimes in second gear it decides to work for a couple of seconds but nothing more.

Electronic, to be honest it's my mates car so any questons i may have to ask him. He hasn't got net access so i said i'd try some forums to see what i could find any advice would be muc appreciated. I belive he's already changed the sender unit and his next possible cause is the actual gear box? possibly replacing the enitire gearbox with a second hand one. or get some one to rebuild his one?

The only time I have seen the gears get chewed is on cable speedo models with a jammed cable or speedo head.
