Hi. I'm after buying a coupe. I don't want a big engine due to fuel and running costs. Do I go for the 2.0 or the 2.2? Why? All advice and opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Never owned one but always wanted one way back when they were quite newish. I looked at a few of the 4 cylinder ones, was put off by the worn seat bolsters. Ended up with a (very good as it happens Sierra 2.0 GHIA)..I digress..

Now I would go for the 5 cylinder for the sound.

Hiya,

I have had both 4 and 5 pot engines and although the 4 pot is a bullet proof engine it just does nothing over the 5 potter. Both engines do have their own niggly faults and fuel consuption in my opinion is neither here nor there but the 5 pot sounds a dream and pulls far better than the 4 pot. hope this does help you.

All the best
Sledge.

If we were talking about 4 cylinders versus 8 or even 6 perhaps, then I would say yes. However 4 to 5, I would say nothing in it.

I don't think there's much in it regarding reliability? The 2.2 was discontinued in 1990 maybe better to look for a 2.3? The 2 Litre 8v is 115hp, the 16v 140hp the 2.3 is 133/136hp depending on year.
The 8v is not much of a performer but is probably best on fuel overall? The 16v by nature lacks bottom end and would be thirsty around town but reasonable on a run. The 5cyl's are not known for being frugal but have noticeably more bottom end than the 4 cyl's. May be the best compromise for mixed/town driving? I'd opt for a 16v if mostly motorway driving?
If fuel consumption is a concern, avoid the 2.3 20v at all costs! The 170hp kind of makes up for it...
