View Full Version : Sudden loss of power

I have an Audi A4 1.9 TDI (2001). Car was running well, until a few days ago.

I started my car as I usually do, took off in 1st gear, as I went to put the car in 2nd gear, I noticed a loss of power and the car stalled.

Gave it a few minutes, started the car again and took off in 1st gear and the same thing happened again.

I booked the car into a local audi specialist and he said my air flow meter was faulty so he replaced that said he had cleaned out my fuel pump as he reckoned there was water mixing with the diesel..... any ideas how this would happen....

Got the car back ran it a few days, no problems, thought everything was ok, until yesterday. Started the car and took off in 1st gear, then sudden loss of power again. This time I phoned RAC, to see if he could locate the fault.

This time it also seemed like the car was missing some revs, normally the rev counter should stay just below the 1 on the rev counter, it was fluctuating up above one and then below and then the car would stall. I also noticed some black smoke when I hit the rev to about 4000.

The RAC guy came and believe it or not the car started running ok, no black smoke, and in full power. He had put it down to maybe something in the turbo had collapsed.... but advised to get it checked out fully from audi specialist.

Any comments or advice on the above will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mate, If you look at my last few posts I had the exact same problem, This was resolved however by a new MAF sensor or Airflow Meter, Did audi replace yours or did they just clean it, My car drove like new after replacing the MAF, cleaning didnt really help at all.

Thanks for your reply nutter.....

Yep ive had the genuine air flow meter put in by an audi specialist, but the problem happened again after that had been put in.

Im going to take the car back into him and see if he can find anything else wrong. One of the things mentioned to me was the turbo, but im not 100% sure.

Mmmm. Ok , Im not doubting your mechanic, only reason I asked is because when I bought my A4 my mechanic friend had a drive of it and said it seemed underpowered and advised to get a new MAF as a condition of sale. They agreed to this, After a month or so it started to fail , when I returned to the mechanics who supposed to have replaced it they advised that they only cleaned it " Lying Bast*** Dealers ", I believe the best way to check is to look at the MAF, the platic tube should look new and there should be 2 new screws in place. If the plasitc looks faded then they have just cleaned it

Im no expert, but its worth double checking. The symptoms sound exactly the same as mine before the new sensor.

Can you tell me where the air flow meter is located, im not very good with engines, so I can check if it is new or not.

He charged me £82 for the new one from audi parts.

Thanks again

Open the bonett, Look down at the engine, look the bottom left, follow the black plastic air intake, you will see a small plastic pipe with a black electrical cable plugged into it, There are 2 screws attached also. This is the MAF

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Thanks mate.

Recently i fitted new ice blue headlights and had to take the air intake thing off to get to the bulbs.

Would that add to the problem with the loss of power as i may have not secured it back in place.

Let me know

Cheers
