got a mk4 dt tdi. i had a problems these last 2 days. when im driving harsh or high speeds over 3000 revs my car just siplls the water out and overheats. then i have to fill it up and need to drive slowly or smooth not to happen again. i moved the water coolant to see for any leakage and ther is water underneath. i moved the pipes and they seem fine.
i guess when is hot it boils so much it spills the water form coolant.
any ideas?
thank you

its be a possibility, could be a few things
are you loosing coolant
is the oil contaminated

when it over heats see if the rad is hot and all the pipe's, if there coldish its probably water pump??

thank for the replyes

i am loosing lots of coolant from the side vent of the fill tank. i donne 50miles today and i had to add 2 litres before end of journey because it was empty and the overheated while i was driving.
i will check later on today if the pipes are cold.

yer thats the start of the problem,
where exactly is it leaking from?
probably overheating cause there no water?

i didnt realise there was a vent
i dont think its supposed to be leaking you may need a new expansion tank

Hi tony19,
had the same problem a few months ago with my tdi. Turned out to be the head gasket. It had gone soft between cylinder 3 and one of the water gallaries, leaking combustion gasses into the cooling system.

There isnt a leak from the expansion tank. It's just the pressure relief valve in the cap letting off pressure. The cap releases at around 1.5bar and combustion gasses are at 19bar!

Another thing i noticed on my car was that when the temp needle went up, hot air stopped coming from the heater???

P.S. until you get it sorted if you see the temp going up, knock the car into neutral for a few 100 yards: stops the car overheating completely.

worst came out.
the garage called me today and there was nothing wrong with the water pump.
they said is either head cylinder or gasket.
they asked £600 for it.:zx11::mad:

thanks for relpy.
aparently they took the water pump off and test it and they said that is in workin order.
when the engine is hot as normal there is three water pipes and one of them is cold.
thats how the RAC guy tested and said that is the water pump.
but garage said water pump is ok.
