View Full Version : Lupo Central Locking and Electric windows

Hi,

I've got a problem with my 1.4 16v Lupo (2000/X reg), which I'm hoping someone can help with.

Basically I think the door locks (driver and passenger) are shot as the barrells seem to turn in the lock without opening the actual door. However, bizarrly enough 'sometimes' the central locking kicks in and works opening all of the doors/boot.

To add insult to the problem I think the problem with the locks is somehow shorting the electric windows as they randomly open all the way down. Needless to say this is not good and I have had to disconect the battery to keep things dry at night!

I want to try to fix this myself as I can see it costing a small fortune - but I've got no idea where to start. Do anyone have any idea what is wrong? or better, has anyone got any guides on stripping the door down and replacing parts etc?

Cheers in advance

Hi Neil,
I had the same problem recently on my wifes 2001 Polo. All the parts are available from VW dealers and cost less than £10 per side. If you unscrew the torx screw just inside the door, the handle can be removed to have a look at what's gone wrong. Usually, the lock barrel is O.K., but the alloy surrounding the barrel breaks away a bit and the washers and spring fall out. The windows can be opened and closed by holding the key fully clockwise or anticlockwise, so the fact that all the barrel has turned probably means that the switches for the door are occasionally activated.
The parts numbers for the bits I needed are as follows:
6N0837313 - Washer
6N0837634 - Mounting
6N0837229A - Spring
6N0837223A - Excentric
6N0837238C - Carrier
If you send me your email address, I'll forward you a diagram of the lock/handle mechanism.
Cheers,
Trev. :beerchug:

I have the same problem with my wifes 2001 Polo.

Got the new bits to fix it, but cannot for the life of me work out how it is supposed to go back together. I know roughly, but cannot get spring in right position or decide if it matters which way round the 3 tab'd ring goes etc.

Can anyone help and please can you send me the diagram (kevdodd@hotmail.com)?? Thanks

I've had a two of these break, one on mum's polo and one on my GF's Lupo.

Had an absolute nightmare doing the first one so I decided to make this vid. Hope it's helpful (apart from the bit where my giant hand is in the way - :banghead:).

I have just been reading about this and it seams that I am not the only one to have lock problems. I could do with a copy of that diagram please and to know how to unlock a door from the inside when the key is jammed in the dead lock position i.e. 90 degrees anticlockwise. I turned the key and it locked solid and snapped something as I forced it to the vertical. Now it won’t budge. I am in the car and hade the upper card off but cannot open the door. Any help would be great. Lupo 1.4 Sport 2001

From memory, If you can open the door you need remove the top trim panel, loosen the central locking unit and remove the door handle (it'll come out with the key still in it). Disassemble the unit and order one of these - make sure it's the right side & car! (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-LUPO-DOOR-LOCK-REPAIR-KIT-FRONT-RIGHT-/220681228007?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3361a04ee7) It's not often the barrel of the lock breaks in VWs - it's usually the alloy carrier or the paddle.

Follow this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lirCTsXw3CQ) to reassemble and refit.

I hope that helps a little.

Thanks. My problem is that the lock jammed in the dead lock position (if there is one) and I cannot open the door. Thanks for your reply.
