flasher/indicator unit coupe

Hi :1zhelp:

I have an Audi Coupe 1991 and the indicator and hazards have just stopped working. There is no clicking sound when the stalk arm is on as if there is no message.
I have been advised this could be the indicator unit. Does anyone know if this could be the case and if so where it is?!!

Also I disconnected the instruments panel and now the auto check system indicates the number 46. Anyone know what this is and why all other symbols have disappeared?
