Radio won't work

My wife has a '98 A-4 and today the radio stopped and now shows a read out saying SAFE..We can't find our manual..Anyone know what went wrong?

Sounds like a code has activated although I'm not familiar with A4's so I'm afraid I'm just giving you my best guess.
Normally a power interruption would cause it.

Yep sounds like a code. My 2003 Passat is linked to the car according to the manual. You can dis-connect the battery with no problems but if you remove the head unit and place it in another car you have to re-enter the code.

In the event of a car change mine will say "SAFE" on the display.

if it is the original radio then VAG will be able to give you the code, in return for some coin and proof of ownership and vin. there are however car audio specialists may be able to help you for less money.
