Alarm protecting car from me

I've had my 97 Golf for a few years now and it's kind of alway had the problem but it was easy to get around it. At first if I locked the passenger side door I had to also unlock it from that side or the alarm would go off. Just recently I haven't had to lock the car and the alarm goes off when trying to start the car. I know you can't really remove the alarm but is there a way to get this to stop?:confused:
Any info would be greatly appreciated seeing as I can't really go anywhere with the car like this.
