I've got a 52 reg Passat SE 130 and it has developed a weird noise.

The car drives and brakes fine, but when braking to a standstill (e.g. approaching a traffic light), there will sometimes be a 'CLUNK' sound coming from the front JUST BEFORE stopping. When the sound goes, I can feel a brief light pushback on the brake pedal.

My mechanic can't figure it out from a quick check, anyone experienced this and know what it might be?

I had that!

It was a sticking break caliper.

Awesome! Someone who knows!

What do you mean by sticking? What should I tell my mechanic to do?

Both mine and my brothers Passats do this, especially when reversing, we cant find anything wriong with the barakes other than the pads are quite loose in the caliper.

My mechanic is attacking this tomorrow, I'll report back on whether it was an easy job to do. The noise is really irritating, hope I'll have some good news.

Further to my earlier reply both mine and my brothers cars have been fitted with genuine (more expensive) brake pads and the clunk noise has dissapeared.

I think you should try looking at the abs sensors. Mine did this when one became dislodged during a cv boot replacement. Tapping it GENTLY back in to place cured the problem.
