The mechanics tell me it is pretty serious. How serious is it?

My car is a rusty 1989 Mark II

How much to have fixed realistically?

New development - the gearbox has become amazingly difficult to work tonight.

Loud clanking sounds are the norm however the higher gears are much easier to use.

The last time this happened the mech looked under the car and found a screw / bolt / shaft had come undone. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

The exhaust was working fine, temp does not seem outof the ordinary, oil was a little low when I got the car but nothing to write home about and I topped up accordingly.

The mechanics have identified the problem I think. A bolt connecting the gearbox to a crankshaft has come loose. It has happened twice now.

It seems ATU have found the problem. I have a broken part that requires replacing but they cannot supply it. I must go to VW direct.

The part is used underneath my vehicle / engine and when you change gear a small piston moves back and forth. Well the rod / piston is not staying inside the part.

Apparently it costs aboy £50 and then fitting.

I could take a picture if anyone wants to help
