The brakes on my wifes 2001 Polo 1.4 have, for some time been really poor, even though the car sailed through it's MoT with no problems. After a bit of a look around, I found that the plastic pipe from the servo to the engine had split at both ends and was just about off at the servo end. I went to my local VW dealers-VW Priory Park, Hessle nr Hull to pick up a new pipe and they told me that Polo's and Lupo's were recalled for this problem, but only on cars built up to December 1999. I bought two conversion kits, which consist of a piece of rubber pipe and two pipe clips, the idea being to cut the split ends off and replace with the rubber pipes as per the recall. The brakes were immediately back up to full strength after fitting the repaired pipe. I have sent a letter to VW Customer Services with a copy of the recall taken from the VOSA website (as below) to try to get some response from them...
I don't know at what stage VW rectified this fault, but if you have a Polo or Lupo at least up to late 2001, it's worth checking.
Cheers,
Trev..,;) www.vosa.gov.uk (http://www.vosa.gov.uk)

BRAKE VACUUM SUPPLY PIPE CONCERN

Description :
On Polo and Lupo vehicles in the affected chassis number range tension cracks may occur on the vacuum pipe to the brake servo in the area of the connections of the pipes because of a manufacturing fault. If a vacuum pipe leaks, the brake servo loses its function. Without the servo assistance a lot more force must be used on the pedal. But this will not lead to a total failure of the brake system.

Remedial Action :
The fitted vacuum pipes will be checked and if necessary replaced.

Westie, I've just had this same problem on my 1.4 16v Lupo on a 52 reg so it looks like it affects cars way into the 52 reg. My lupo was registered late 52 reg.

The hose split at the connection to the non-return valve causing me to lose most of my brake pressure. Quite dangerous if you ask my opinion
