Hi guys

I am a n00b so please be nice;)

I have recently brought a audi a4 R reg, but it didn't come wit ha remote key. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to begin with getting my mits one? I would love it if someone could point me towards someone who would do everything a dealer would do but without the hefty price tag. On the flip side, I am willing to buy off ebay but I don't know what key's will work with my car. Where do I begin? Please help a n00b :sob sob:

There's lots of posts on here about remote keys, but have a look at this to get you started:

Look for posts by a guy called ini, he seems to know a lot about it all.

Hi there
before you start check if everything work via key that You've got so when you ready get Your new fob and cut your blade because you gonna need them in next few steps its really simple to code in the remote but to code in your transponder you will need VAG tool, but that is the different story.
new remote --- ebay
cut in the nearrest shop
procedure ---- just let me know.......have fun....Kris

if you put your key into the door lock that should activate the pump if You have one you can check fuse as well for CDL , check pump connector in the OSR of vehicle behind the panel .

Best to check with your local dealer, i was after the same thing a few years ago and after a quick phone call to the dealer they confirmed that my car would not support the flip type key to activate the central locking and the immobiliser, i had an aftermarket system fitted by a local audi specialist for £95 including the kit, not as nice as the flip arrangement but still better than key in door!!!
You may be lucky with your A4, but i would still advise you on calling the dealer and asking them or you could end up wasting money on the key/cutting/programming. Just ask them if you can order a flip key for your car, give them the reg or chassis number and they will tell you if you can use one or not, if you can, slam the phone down, get one off ebay, order a new blade from audi and take it to a specialist or decent locksmith and ask them to programme it for you, if Audi programme it they will charge you around £60 for programming only. Good luck.

The dealer also incorrectly told me that 'flip-key' remote central locking could not be enabled on my 97 A4.

The OEM system can be fitted and/or enabled, but is not particularly good, and can be expensive & time consuming as (depending on vehicle age) you may need a new central locking pump, hardware & software to interface the car, visit to the dealer or autolocksmith etc.

I would go with an ebay VAG lookalike flip-key kit, surprisingly they are better than the original remotes.

If it's a 'Rightclick' system then i hear they are very good, piece of victoria sponge to fit aswell,

Have a look, darn sight cheaper than VAG and looks the part.

Aslam:
CDL = Central Door Locking

OSR = Off Side Rear (side that is not next to the kurb) opposite of NSR = Near Side Rear (near to the kurb)

The central locking uses a pneumatic system so it has a pump to pressurise the air in the system.

Just ordered a rightclick flip key fob, so no doubt I will be on looking for help installing it once it arrives, probably should have called the dealer first to check its compatible, but its almost more fun doing it this way. So anyone know how diffucult it is to remove the chip from the original key and put into the new FOB? I only have one key for the car so probably not a bad Idea to get it cloned anyway?
