Hi guys,

I'm new here, know v little about cars, but would really appreciate some help.:1zhelp:

I have a passat tdi 130 (2001) a few weeks ago I noticed a little brown sludge on the top of my coolant- got this flushed and was assured that although this looked like oil it was not likely to be head gasket etc as there was no water in my oil.

anyway pressed on had it serviced and mot'd- all fine. then last week was driving home and check oil light came on- I pulled over and when I checked the oil level I found no oil but a Vaseline like slime everywhere. Also the coolant is now full of (what looks to me like) old oil.

I'm having it towed to a garage today for pressure test etc. But don't know what I'm gonna do?

Does this sounds like a head gasket, cracked block type of problem?
How much might I be looking at to put this right?

Might it be best to get a new engine- Ive had a quote of about £1500 to fit a new (2003) engine with 36k on the clock..Is this good?

Please excuse my ignorance! any hep greatly appreciated

It does sound like a head gasket problem,

I would think fitting a head gasket/skimming the head would only be about £500

£1500 for an exchange engine sounds OK but it's a bit drastic for a head gasket problem.

Samsam did you get your engine sorted? what did you do?

Check your plenum chamber, i am having the same problem and think that the engine might be sucking in water through the tandem pipe on the servo.

I strongly suggest before you do anything major, that you check the oil cooler. They are known to fill the coolant with oil when they go.
