Can you help, steering suddenly stiff and crunching, sound goes and steering ultra hard and stiff, could it be no steering oil, if so where is the access located

Less likely to be a steering rack issue than a ball joint issue. Test it with engine off, jacked up, ifyou get any indication which side it is disconnect the track rod and see if that swivel is stiff. Could also be top swivels - again, to isolate disconnect track rod ends and then you can spin the steering wheel to test the rack and turn each mcpherson strut independantly.
