I have recently acquired a 2001 A6 2.7T which has dual aircon which works very well but, I have a question:
When the cabin temp is close to the selected temp the airflow from the vents cycles between warm and cool. Is this normal?
If the cabin temp is lower then it heats as normal and if the cabin temp is higher it will cool as normal.
Any comments appreciated?

Its perfectly normal. There are few temp sensors located inside the car and the Climate Control does monitor the internal/external temp all the time to compensate for changes. I remember driving trough french Alps towards Italy few years ago and the inside temp was set at 18 Celsius and external temp was -5 Celsius. As i opened the window to smoke(i quit since then !) the fan would go to full hot blast keeping the same temp in the cabin. Then it would cycle between hot and cold to maintain the said temperature. For peace of mind i sugest you get someone scan the car's AC module for fault codes . Hope this helps.
