I bought my 9 seater LWB '03 2.5 tdi Caravelle last May, it wasn't until a short while after buying it i began to notice some shuddering at certain speed (a whole van shudder). I noticed that it would shudder at 1,600 rpm whilst in 4th gear. In November i noticed another problem, on changing from 1st to 2nd it would jump out of gear then back into 2nd with a bump. I now decided to get it checked out at an automatic gearbox specialist garage but before hand it needed a full service so that the warrenty i got with the van was valid. Having got this done it seemed to ease the two problems with the gearbox but the faults hadn't gone away. I took it to the gearbox specialist garage whome then informed me that the warrenty didn't cover the parts that needed to be replaced as it was wear and tare ( some rings in the box/clutch which was causing it to slip). They didn't experience any shuddering whilst taking it out on a test drive as it was in an urban area and the van would hardly get into 4th gear! They stripped and rebuilt the gearbox.
On getting the van back after nearly three weeks the gears were perfoming alot better , no slipping but the shudder was still there on the 4th gear. It progressivly got worse, i had now started taxi-ing and was clocking up the miles.
On changing from 3rd to 4th the revs would drop to 1600rpm and the shudder would shake the van until i gave it more gas for it to change down to 3rd again.
when the engine isn't under load in 4th and i only gently press the gas it seems okay. I took it back to the garage and told them what was happening and aswell as the shudder it was slipping in 2nd again from time to time, they gave it the 500 mile check and told me give it more time to settle!
Two days ago i took it to another garage, the mechanic checked the van over as i thought i may have an ecu issue, he told me that the engine was sound and that the problem was definitely with the gearbox (he suggested i ask them if they reset the ecu adaptations).
The gear box is still under thier warrenty for 12 months or 6000 miles, it's going back to them on 18/02/08 to looked at, could anybody shed some light on what may be happening?????

Hi there, please can you tell me if you ever managed to get this problem solved and if so, how? I have exactly the same "shuddering" problem at certain revs (changing into 4th) and two specialists have been unable to fix the fault. I have now been told it's probably a gearbox issue but before I go ahead and spend yet more money on investigations, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Simon

the problem was the torque converter, had it taken out and rebuilt which cured the problem but is now begining to happen again. Looks like i may have to replace it with a new one which will cost, i believe, 600 pounds. To have it rebuilt your looking at aroud 300 pounds. I also replaced the temperature coolant sensor which stopped the slipping in 1 and 2. I also have lock up issues where i have to pull the van over and switch the engine off to reset the the gearbox ecu which would solve the lock up problem. This happens especially when the van has a full load or has been on the road for quite a few hours, i may have to perform this action quite a few time over the space of a night. Purchased a new gearbox ecu but this dosen't call for lock up until 50mph hense making it underpowered and more juicy on diesel!
