Give your poor motor a chance. By putting bigger (probably heavier) wheels on you'll suck on the power far more. You'd be much better off going for a cheeky set of deep dish 13 or 14" alloys for that old skool stylee. 16 or 17" rims will slow you down, reduce your fuel consumption and make your G2 look Barry

One of my Golf 2's (an 89 1.9 conversion 8v GTI, the wife’s daily) has 6.5x15 ET38 wheels with 195/50 tyres and I think this is a perfect set up. My other Golf 2 (an 88 2.2 conversion 16v, was my daily but no longer) has 7.5x17 ET35's with 205/40 tyres and these ruin the car dynamically but look good. I would not recommend going further than 7x16 ET35's with 205/45 tyres unless looks is the only criterion.

Just to clarify that previous post, I would suggest 7x16 ET35's with 195/45 tyres and this should keep arch rubbing problems to a minimum although it will still rub if lowered even 20-mm but usually only a little on the right front arch at the 12’oclock position which is easily clearanced.
