Hi guys, I bought the missus a 96 R Reg Polo Classic 1.9SDi last year. She's always complained it was slower than her old Pug 405 which frankly I found hard to believe. I've just driven it though and it really feels down on power, struggling to get to 70 then running out of puff. I've changed the air filter which has helped it rev a little better - anything else fairly easy to check/change, I've heard fuel filters or pumps (!) can cause problems?

I'd change the fuel filter and the oil. However, the SDI engine isn't very powerful they are only 64 BHP 0-60 in 15.3 secs and top speed of 100 mph

Here's my first post but I hope I'll be of help

I had a '97 Ibiza 1.9 (Owned from new) up until this time last year...my engine's valve gear decided to bin itself while I was doing 75mph. It was the 1Y engine of course, not the SDi mav617 mentions. It'd done 80K easy motorway miles.

However, I had a similar symptom with low acceleration around the 70mph+ area for a few months before the failure. Everything seemed fine it just didn't seem so perky. Nothing too bad I thought. It had a full service, new exhaust and passed its mot fine in Dec 2006. I mentioned the slightly dulled performance to the vw specialist garage at the time and they said all was fine after checking it.

I did use some redex diesel stuff to clean the fuel lines prior to the service, but funnily enough I lived in the south east when the silicate fuel problem was happening. Not sure if they were factors in my 1Y's downfall.

I scrapped the car in the end so I guess I should have took more note of the issue.

mav617 - I'd get a garage to check the compression + to look out for suspicious ticking in the tappet area and make sure to change the oil & filter regularly.

As people regularly tell me when I say I miss my Ibiza, "It was just a one off mate", "You were unlucky with it" blah blah...I just wish I'd had it checked more closely.
