Hi folks. I am in desperate need of some help and advice.

I purchased an R registration Audi A3 in May of last year. Two weeks after this the car started to have problems. To cut a long story short the faults are:

1. Car does not always start first time from cold
2. If is starts second or third time the engine runs badly and more often than not it cuts out
3. The car will cut out when I slow down to turn in or out of a junction

These are all intermittent faults. The car is under warranty and has been going back and fro from the garage for nine months. In December I started the car and it backfired thus shattering the engine manifold. The garage had the car back and replaced all the parts. The car has been into Audi and the computer it not registering a fault.

I apparently have had a new ignition switch, tried all three of my keys, new sensors and numerous other bits. On average I have to take it back every two weeks.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THIS? I really would appreciate it.

Thank you

Thought so, an AKL-the most problematical engine of the lot attached to the worst gearbox I have ever known in VW history, the DUU. AKL engines suffer from terrible idle problems and these are usually due to a dirty or non re-adapted throttle body, faulty Air Mass Meter, faulty ignition leads, unsuitable spark plugs, leaking breather pipe or faulty lambda sensor. I think you need to start afresh with a new garage, preferably an enthusiastic independent VW/Audi specialist and take it from there.

Thought maybe this could be of some help.Carbon deposits on injectors, combustion chamber surfaces and in the intake system can result in severe running problems following cold starting and in loss of engine power. Tests have shown that coking is mainly caused by fuels and oils with inadequate amounts of additives.A range of cleaning processes were tested, with the help of which coking deposits can be removed. The most effective method was found to be the injection of a cleaning mixture into the running engine. The cleaning equipment BEDI can be used. The cleaning procedure is performed with the engine idling and takes about 30 minutes

thank you so much for coming back to me.

The main problem that i have is nothing shows on the computer on the fault recording. Would these still be the cause?

I have to stay with the garage as the car is under warranty. currently argueing with them for a full refund.

Thanks again.

Hi, sorry to hear someone else is experiencing the same problems. I have an R reg 1.6 sport and i have experienced everything as you have described. When idling the car would more often than not stall. In the cold it also struggles to start. The petrol consumption is also much higher than it should be i was origionally getting 40 miles out of £10. Firstly I serviced it i.e oil flush, replaced air filter and oil filter and spark plugs. I had it scanned which came up as the Mass Air Flow Meter. This made sence to me as this would also account for the petrol situation. I had this replaced and cleaned the Throttle Body, there was little improvement although it has stopped stalling. Two weeks later the Clutch hit the floor which I replaced along with Gear Box components. The car was running slightly better and was a little more responsive however fuel consumption is still an issue. My radiator cracked yesterday :aargh4:.It is leaking badly. Does anyone know of a way I can repair it as this car has burnt my pocket enough already. Any advice on all of my issues would be greatly appreciated..................

Replace the radiator, do not use rad seal.
