Hello all. I have an A3,1997 P 1.8 sport 6V (not turbo). Its done 130k, and this cold start problem now happens even in not so cold conditions, since the miles clocked 100k. The engine starts, and there is a clicking similar to a stick on bike spokes which lasts a couple of seconds. Its coming from the top end of the engine. The car runs fine after this. I have had a new starter motor, so thats not sticking. A mechanic friends theory is that as the valve seals are worn, so oil is draining into the sump. The noise is the hydrolic tappets moaning before oil is pushed up to lubricate them. Would be interested to see what everyone else thinks.
Any replies greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Steve- South Yorkshire.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I suspect that will be a noisy cam chain tensioner/valve timing adjuster and a worn chain. This is very common on these engines and to replace it means removing the cam cover and the camshafts.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know if there is any engine damage as a result of this? Also, is it a big job to fix? My mate only charges a tenner per hour, it would be the part cost that concerns me.
Thanks,
Steve.

The adjuster for an AGN engine is 058 109 088 B and costs £300.53 from Audi but is available elsewhere plus you need the chain 058 109 229 B at £40 and the cam belt kit, water pump, coolant, cam cover gasket, inlet manifold gasket, cam oil seal etc.
