Hi another newbie I'm afraid!

I have a couple of issues which I am hoping somebody could help me with. I've had my Golf for about 5 years now with no problems apart from the back end of 07 when things just started to fail on the car. I've recently had the CAM belt changed and also the main electrics board and various censors go.
what i am experiencing now though is that when i am coming to a halt with either the clutch depressed or not, I find that the rev's used to hover at a constant around the 800 mark, but now they will fluctuate between 1000 and drop down to 500. when this happens the engine will make a whirring sound and my headlights will dim and then light up. However when I come to a complete standstill i.e. at the lights, it will hover back up at 800 revs and settle.
I'm also getting the dreaded shakes when I am traveling at slow or fast speeds and even at standstill. I noticed it on the motorway when traveling at 70-80mph the car would start shaking (not violently but enough so you could feel it) and there would be nothing from pressing the gas peddle but would kick back in when I took my foot off the gas and reapplied it. But recently it has started to happen at slower speeds and sometimes at standstill.
I took it to VW Technics in Cambridge, the diagnostic machine stated everything is in order so it points to the fact that its mechanical failure somewhere.
would anyone have any ideas on what the issue could be? I've asked around and people have said it could be the air/fuel ratio which causes the revving up and down and possibly a 'coil pack failure' for the shakes.

many thanks!

I had a similair problem with my 1.6 petrol, erratic revs and in all pretty bad running of the engine at slow speeds; i.e. in car parks etc.

Took it to a good german car specialist and i was told the throttle body needed cleaning.

Cost me about £60 and she fealt brand new afterwards!

It seems to be a common fault in the petrol non turbo engines, not sure about diesel!
