I do not know what you mean by airbag sensors.
I am reading the HAYNES new beetle service manual for 1998-2005
According to the manual the seatbelts are called IMPACT SEAT BELT RETRACTORS.

HERES WHAT THE MANUAL STATES
"16. All models are equipped with pyrotechnic (explosive) unites in the front seat belt retracting mechanism for both the lap and shoulder belts. During an impact that would trigger the airbag syste, the airbag control unit also triggers the seat belt retractors. When the pyrotechnic charges go off, they accelerate the retractors to instantly take up and slact in the seat belt system to more fully prepare the drive and front seat passenger for impact.
17. The airbag system should be disabled anytime work is done to or around the seats or the body "B" pillars. Caution: Never strike the pillars or floorpan with a hammer or impact=driver tool unless the system is diabled" (HAYNES SERVICE MANUAL 2000, 2002, 2007, pg. 12-20)
