how to connect??

right i have vag com 409 and 311 installed incase one does not work. i recieved my cable today and drivers,

the drivers loaded in ok etc.

i started the program with the cable lugged in but not in to my car. it says that its not connected when i try and test a port.

question is does it need to be plugged in to the car first??

i just plugged the cable in to the car and the computer, clicked on USB and test, it comes up with unable to find ross tech USB devise??

Which version of cable do you own?

Is it USB or Serial?

Have you looked at the other posts in here with respect to aligning the port that Windows thinks its using for your cable to the selected port in VAG-COM?

The best you could do is contact the person from whom your bought your interface hardware, those people should know where the most common problems with 3rd party interfaces are.

We have seen problems like this in the past and discusses it several times so maybe this thread could help you a little...
