Boot won't shut

we have a VW Passatt 2.5, a lovely car but has developed a problem with the boot, it won't shut. The Rac came out stuck a screwdriver in the mechanism pressed the buttons on the key fob and it all appeared fine for a week now it has done it again, could it be a sticky solenoid as they have suggested or a microswitch, or should I just spray it with WD40:aargh4:

May be worth trying WD40 first, that's the cheapest option;)

Thanks for replying stuart but the WD40 hasn't worked, any other ideas.
