compressor air outlet loose

Hi All

Originally posted this in the Touran section but got no response, as it is a question regarding the engine rather than a specific VW Car thought I would try it in this section.

Does anyone know if running a 1.4 TSI 140PS engine with the air outlet of the compressor loose for the first 300miles cause any problems for engine in future? Could any dust or moisture have come into the engine from the loose pipe?

Any ideas?

Please could someone post a reply, even if its a "don't be daft" one.

Someone noticed that they had the same engine as mine in their touran and wanted to know how mine drove, because his engine wasn't pulling between 1000-2000 rpm and had a hissing sound coming from the engine. Told him mine had loads of torque throughout the rev range. By this time he had done about 300miles.

The dealership found out that the air outlet of the compressor was loose. Once tightened the engine seemed fine. VW are now looking into how the car got through the PDI. However the owner is worried about about any damage which may have occoured to the engine during the first 300miles.

Any replies would be appreciated.

There should not be damage to the car's engine as the ECU sense the condition and limits the fuelling to minimise power/smoke. The turbocharger is working harder though, as the ECU is forcing him to give more boost and you will hear the changing pitch as the turbocharger vanes adjust to compress more air. As long as there is a clean, fresh supply of oil from the engine, the turbocharger will be fine ! Visually check the compressor's blades for damage, dust could enter the engine but its too early to judge. Moisture will dry as soon as it hits the hot turbocharger's blades ! Hope this helps !

If it's the outlet hose loose, all that can happen is a loss of boost pressure. Nothing should have entered the engine as the pressure in the hose is higher than outside air pressure.

After some research by the owner of the TSI Touran, he found out that it was the air inlet hose, not outlet which was loose. Which means that the air going into the engine has been bypassing the air filter, what will be the worst thing that can happen to an engine running for 300miles with unfiltered air?

Any ideas?
