View Full Version : Secondary air pump

I have a '98 Alhambra which I bought at 53,000 miles and has now only done 94,000.
The secondary air pump has just recently been replaced (£320 just for the pump!!) due to the bearings going.
I also discovered some yellow 'sludge' on the oil filler cap at the same time.
I have flushed the engine and changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago but the yellow sludge has re-appeared but not as bad as before.
Can anyone advise me if this and the air pump could be related!
My theory is that the reason the pump went was because maybe the non-return valve was sticking, allowing condensation from the exhaust fumes to enter it, and maybe the sludge on the oil filler cap is condensation caused by the sticking non return valve.
The pump has only worked about 3 or 4 times since replacement so I'm taking a hunch at maybe the sensor's faulty too. The pump used to work every day up until about 3 months ago.
Does anyone know how I can replace the non-return valve myself, and possibly the sensor, without the huge expense of a specialist garage? Also, can you tell me where to locate these components on the car?
Any advice would be appreciated.
