B5 - take 19" wheels ok? Advice please!

I want to give my 1.8T (with lowered suspension and 16" alloys) a late Xmas present of some new wheels, was looking at 17", then 18", now 19" wheels - hey what the heck. Can find plenty that fit (5x112) but are there any 'problems' with 19" wheels on a B5? thankyou for your experience! Great forum btw.

19's will fit, but with lowered suspension and such low profile tyres the ride is going to be harsh.

thankyou - I do over 60 miles a day so may not wish to compromise ! I've also read that 19" rims can rub on tight lock. Will go back to the 18" I was looking at - guess still a ride issue but less? all the best

I have 18" merc rims on mine with 225/40/18 tyres and I have no probs with rubbing/scraping on either lock or with a load in the boot....its an estate. I have about a 2/3 inch gap from tyre to arch if that helps
Also rides very similar to standard, cant really tell the difference tbh

I went for them on local garage's advice - they look great, fill the wheel arches with no rubbing even on full lock, although I do find the ride a bit harsher, it's not like it's uncomfortable at all. Glad I went for the larger rims!

Hi i just put a set of 18" Audi RS4s on my Passat and theres no problems with rubbing or anything like that but they have made it a little harsher to sit in and the steering seems to respond to any changes in the camber of the road. You could be driving along nice and straight and it seems to want to pull to one side then it goes ok again. Is this just because of the size of the wheels, everything was nice and sweet before the change.

Steveo, this called "tramlining" and probably down to the size of the tyres.

However it may be worth while having the tracking checked.

When you come to replace the tyres (in a yr or so once you are used to the tramlining!) try replacing them with non-rotational tyres. This can reduce or even eliminate "tramlining"

Just had new track rod ends so steering was lined after that but im sorta getting used to it now. Its maybe not as bad as i thought, i think it was just the difference in going from standard wheels to the big ones. Thanks
